In addition to becoming the current Olympic champion in the javelin throw, Neeraj Chopra PVSM VSM (born 24 December 1997) also holds silver medals from the World Championships and the Diamond League. He is the first athlete from Asia to win the men's javelin throw gold medal at the Olympics. Chopra, a Junior Commissioned Officer Subedar (JCO) in the Indian Army, is the nation's first track and field gold medalist in Olympic history.[5] In 2016, he created a new global U20 record with a throw of 86.48 meters, making him the first Indian track and field athlete to do so. He is also the first Indian to win the global Under-20 Championships.
Chopra competed at both the 2018 Asian Games and the 2018 Commonwealth Games, acting as the flag bearer in the latter and taking home gold in both competitions. He is the first person to have won a gold medal in his Olympic debut, the youngest Indian to ever win an individual gold medal at the Olympics, and one of only two Indians (the other being Abhinav Bindra) to have done it as of 2021.[6] He became the second Indian to win a medal at a World Athletics Championships with his silver medal in the 2022 World Championships.
Chopra holds the javelin throw national record for India.
