As a result of his accomplishment, he was given the title Datuk and was hailed as a national hero by then-Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak.[4] In 2012 and 2016, he replicated the feat twice more, making him the most successful Malaysian Olympian in history.
Following a diagnosis of nose cancer, Lee struggled to get back to full fitness before announcing his retirement on June 13 of this year.He was chosen to serve as Malaysia's chef de mission for the 2020 Summer Olympics,[7] but he chose not to attend the competition because of health issues. He continued to perform his duties, although remotely.
