At the Johnny Lats Gym in New York City, where he started working out with personal trainer Jakob Panotas in 1996, Greene developed a passionate interest in bodybuilding. He participated in NPC competitions with the intention of joining the IFBB. His perception of his performance at the NPC is divided. Despite having won the 1999 NPC Team Universe competition, he took a five-year vacation from competing before making a comeback and winning the 2004 NPC Team Universe tournament.[10] When his professional career began as a bodybuilder, this victory allowed him to become an IFBB member.
