 Former swimmer Bula Choudhury was born in Hugli, India, on January 2, 1970. She is a former national women's swimming champion of India, a recipient of the Arjuna and Padma Shri awards, and she served as Nandanpur's MLA from 2006 to 2011 in the Indian state of West Bengal.

She dominated her age category in her first national competition at the age of nine, taking home six gold medals over six different events. She kept getting better, taking home numerous junior and national titles in addition to six gold medals in the 1991 South Asian Federation Games. She attended her first nationals at the record-setting age of twelve. This also secured her a spot in the relay team for the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane and a significant spot on the list of likely competitors for the Asiad.

She established a national 100m butterfly record in 1984 with a time of 1:06.19 seconds. She established records for the 100-meter butterfly (1:05.27 seconds) and the 200-meter butterfly (2:19.60 seconds) in the Seoul Asian Games in 1986.[3] In 1989, Choudhury began long-distance swimming and completed the English Channel crossing that year. In 1996, she won the 81-kilometer (50-mile) Murshidabad Long Distance Swim, and in 1999, she successfully swam across the English Channel once more. She achieved this feat in August 2004 when she completed the roughly 14-hour swim from Talaimannar, Sri Lanka, to Dhanushkodi, Tamil Nadu.

In 2005, she made history by swimming across five sea channels: the Strait of Gibraltar, the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Cook Strait, the Toroneos Gulf (Gulf of Kassándra) in Greece, the Catalina Channel off the coast of California, and from Three Anchor Bay to Robben Island close to Cape Town, South Africa. By swimming the 30 km track in 3 hours and 26 minutes, she set a record. She now has plans to open a swimming school in Kolkata.
